  • Description

Israeli Prime Minister Mrs. Golda Meir has announced her resignation. The statement came from the labor Party tonight (Wednesday, 10 April), after final efforts this week to resolve differences within the month-old Labour dominated coalition government.

On the eve of her resignation, Mrs. Meir was chairing a crisis meeting of her cabinet, following last week's publication of an interim report into errors committed during last year's October War by senior military officers. The report had already caused the resignation of Chief-of-Staff Lieutenant-General David Elzar and top intelligence officers. And there ware calls for the resignation of Defence Minister Moshe Dayan as well.

Tonight's announcement suggests that the cabinet was unable to find a compromise between the Labour hardliners, who wanted Mr. Dayan
to resing, and his own seven-man Rafi faction in the government, who have argued that Mr. Dayan was not blamed in the interim report, and that the whole cabinet should resign -- either to be reshuffled or face now elections.

Initial reports suggested that Mrs. Meir would formally announced her resignation in the Knesset (Parliament) on Thursday, and there are expectations that new elections will have to be held.

Meanwhile, the wave of discontent with government policies that has been a legacy of the October War bought a new protest in Jerusalem on Tuesday. Students started a hunger-strike, shackling themselves in chains at the Western Wall, to draw attention to the treatment of Jews in Syria. They are particularly incensed over the arrest of two young Jews in Damascus, who are accused of having murdered four Jewish women. They are encouraging the public to join in their protest by signing a petition.
