Background: A military parade in Lima on Monday (July 29) marked the 153rd. anniversary of the independence of Peru.
The Cuban Defence Minister, Raul and the Argentine commander-in-chief, General Leandro Anaya, visited Lima for the Independence Day celebrations.
They attended the military parade which was reviewed by Peru's President Juan Velasco Alvardo.
The parade was led by the Peru Battalion, recently returned from duty in the Middle East with the United Nations forces there. Naval and Air Force contingents also took part in the Parade.
Earlier, in a nation-wide speech, President Velasco re-affirmed his Government's independent foreign policy.
The President said Peru's recent joining in there group of non-aligned countries demonstrated "the independent and third world orientation" of the country's diplomacy. He said the decision linked Peru more closely to other countries struggling for self determination against the pressures of the big powers.
President Velasco also gave an account of Peru's economic achievements and spoke on a number of domestic questions.
The Independence Day celebrations marked the anniversary of Peru declaring itself independent from Spain in 1821.
