  • Description

Huge crowds attended an anti-communist rally in Milan's Cathedral Square on Sunday. (30th April).

The rally was intended primarily as a call for right-wing votes for the forthcoming Italian General Election, due for next Sunday (April 7th). One of the main speakers, Anti-Communist Committee representative Mr. Begli Occhi, called for right-wing votes and spoke of the dangers of communis in Italy.

The meeting was also addressed by representatives from the main anti-communist parties, the Christian Democrate and the Liberal Party, It is now thought possible that the two parties will be coalition partners in government if they win against a united communist front.

The right-wing stronghold is generally taken to be southern Italy and Sicily. But the northern Italian city of Milan is a city of two extremes, having a strong neo-fascist element, although still outnumbered by communists. On the following day (Monday), the city was the scene of one of the large May-Day rallies organised by the communist Union Confederation simultaneously throughout Italy.
