  • Description

Denmark won the Women's World Football Championship on Sunday for the second successive year, defeating Mexico three-nil before a massive crowd in the Aztec Stadium, scene of last year's World Cup final in the male version of the game.

All three Danish goals were scored by Susan Augustenssen. The Danes, mostly taller than the Mexican women, dominated play throughout the match and never allowed the home side to build up an attack. They showed the same flair that won them the cup in Italy last year.

Last week there was doubt whether the game would be played. The Mexicans, having beaten Italy 2-1 to reach the last round, threatened to strike if they were not paid for appearing in the final. They were entitled to be declared professionals.

SYNOPSIS: World Cup football fever returned to the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City at the week end, as an enthusiastic crowd packed the huge stands for the final of the women' world football championships between Mexico and Denmark. Mexico and Denmark. Mexico, in striped sock, kicked off playing form right to left.

The Danish girls, mostly taller than the rivals, quickly established their domina but this attack failed when Miss Kamp, wearing number eight, shot wide.

The home side, though urged on by the ??? only rarely looked dangerous.

The Danes showed themselves a fast and flexible team, and quick to exploit defence errors. They went ahead with goal from Susan Augustenssen, wearing no eleven.

A midfield collision which injured Mexi Paula perez, did not help the home side in its efforts to equalise.

The second half showed the Danish girls once more in aggressive mood.

A lucky cross from Susan Augustenssen, always dangerous on the left wing, put Denmark further ahead.

A third goal from the talented Miss Augustenssen clinched the cup series for Denmark, for the second time in two year.
