Background: After a two-day delay, United States chess challenger Bobby Fischer arrived in Iceland on Tuesday(4 July) for his world championship match with Soviet title holder Boris Spassky.

Billed as the chess match of the century, the event was close to being called of when Fischer did not show up on schedule. At the last minute a British millionaire offered to double the prize money, meeting Fischer's demanded price.

Fischer accepted the proposal made by London financier Jim Slater and left New York for Reykjavik on Monday night.

But before the first of 24 games was scheduled to begin, the Soviet news agency Tass reported from Moscow that Spassky would refuse to play Fischer until the American had been disciplined by the World Chess Federation.

The report said Spassky believes that Fischer has insulted him and the Soviet Chess federation by failing to appear at last Saturday's opening ceremony.
