  • Description

STUDENTS AND POLICE CLASHED TODAY (FRIDAY) IN THE PAKISTAN CITY OF RAWALPIND: AS VIOLENCE AND TENSION CONTINUED TO MOUNT THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY FOLLOWING A WEEK OF UNREST. THIS IS THE LATEST MAJOR CITY TO BE INVOLVED IN VIOLENT PROTESTS THAT HAVE CLAIMED 31 LIVES AS DEMONSTRATORS DEMAND SWEEPING POLITICAL REFORMS. IN KARACHI, ONE OF PAKISTAN'S BIGGEST CITIES, TROOPS YESTERDAY JOINED POLICE TO CONTROL RIOTS CAUSED WHEN RIVAL FACTIONS CLASHED.

DURING THE KARACHI CLASH, SEVEN PEOPLE WERE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN KILLED. ABOUT 200 SHOPS WERE BURNED-OUT OR WRECKED IN THE MAIN COMMERCIAL CENTRE OF LIAQUATABAD.

ARMY UNITS WERE BROUGHT IN TO MAINTAIN CONSTANT PATROLS OF THE AREA.

A CURFEW IMPOSED AFTER THE CLASH WAS LIFTED BETWEEN 4 P.M. AND 6 P.M. TO ALLOW WORKERS TO REACH HOME.

TENSION HAS GROWN OVER THE COUNTRY AMID POLITICAL OPPOSITION TO THE GOVERNMENT OF PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN. THE PRESIDENT, WHO HAS SO FAR MADE NO STATEMENT ON THE WAVE OF UNREST, IS DUE TO MAKE HIS REGULAR MONTHLY BROADCAST TO THE COUNTRY TOMORROW (SATURDAY).

POLITICAL OPPONENTS HAVE CALLED FOR THE ABDICATION OF THE 62-YEAR-OLD LEADER, WHO TOOK POWER IN A BLOODLESS COUP TEN YEARS AGO.
