  • Description

THE FIRST WORLD FESTIVAL OF NEGRO ARTS HAS ENDED IN DAKAR, SENEGAL, AFTER THREE WEEKS OF MUSIC, CINEMA, EXHIBITIONS AND THEATRICAL PERFORMANCES WHICH DREW MORE THAN 2,000 PARTICIPANTS FROM ABOUT 30 COUNTRIES.

THE CENTRE-PIECE OF THE FESTIVAL WAS A PAINTING BY THE SPANIARD PABLO PICASSO -- INCLUDED BECAUSE OF THE INFLUENCE OF AFRICAN ART ON HIS STYLE -- WHICH WAS THE PRIZE IN A FESTIVAL LOTTERY. SENEGAL'S NATIONAL FESTIVAL COMMISSIONER, MR SOULEYMANE SIDIBE, DESCRIBED THE FESTIVAL AS A GREAT SUCCESS AND ESTIMATED THAT IT HAD ATTRACTED AT LEAST 10,000 VISITORS TO SENEGAL.

THE FESTIVAL WAS PLANNED TO SHOW THE WHOLE OF THE CONTRIBUTION TO WORLD CIVILIZATION OF THE BLACK AFRICAN AND HIS DESCENDANTS SCATTERED ACROSS THE GLOBE. MR SIDIBE SAID IT HAD "PUT THE ACCENT ON THE UNITY OF NEGRO ART IN ITS DIVERSITY".
