Mr. Robert McNamara, President of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, more commonly known as the World Bank, arrived in Damascus, capital of Syria, on Sunday (10 November). The World Bank specialises in helping the poorer nations of the world to develop their industry and agriculture and the purpose of Mr. McNamara's visit is to give aid to syria through the International Monetary Fund.
Syria's economy was badly hit by the October war as Israeli aircraft hit the countries major industries, oil refineries, power stations, roads and bridges. The country is mainly agricultural and the economy in the rural areas is in a depressed state with people pouring into the towns in search of jobs. Illiteracy and poor health conditions are prevalent in the countryside.
In recent years Soviet financial and technical assistance has provided the backbone for Syria's development programme.
