  • Description

BRITAIN'S RULING LABOUR PARTY RETAINED FOUR SEATS AND LOST ONE ON TODAY'S (THURSDAY) MINIATURE GENERAL ELECTION, DESPITE A STRONG SWING TO THE OPPOSITION CONSERVATIVE PARTY. LABOUR PARTY NARROWLY HELD TWO INNER LONDON CONSTITUENCIES IN PADDINGTON AND ISLINGTON, WON MORE COMFORTABLY IN THE GLASGOW DISTRICT OF GORBALS -- A LABOUR STRONGHOLD SINCE THE TURN OF THE CENTURY -- AND SCRAPED A NARROW VICTORY IN THE MINING DISTRICT OF NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME IN THE MIDLANDS. THEY LOST OUT TO THE CONSERVATIVES-AFTER TWO RECOUNTS - IN THE SOUTHERN ENGLAND ELECTORATE OF SWINDON.

THE SWING TO THE CONSERVATIVES RANGED FROM 7.8 PER CENT IN THE GORBALS TO 11.4 IN PADDINGTON -- ENOUGH TO GIVE THE OPPOSITION PARTY A MAJORITY OF 100 SEATS IN PARLIAMENT IF THE BY-ELECTION TREND WERE MAINTAINED IN A GENERAL ELECTION.

WHILE LABOUR'S SHOWING WAS BETTER THAN IT'S PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC OPINION POLLS THIS SUMMER, THE RESULT HAS BOOSTED CONSERVATIVE HOPES OF WINNING THE GENERAL ELECTION WHICH IS EXPECTED NEXT YEAR.

ONE OF BRITAIN'S LEADING BOOKMAKERS HAS MADE THE CONSERVATIVES 2-1 ON TO WIN A NATIONAL ELECTION.
