Background: Tennis...and Argentina won the South American zone final of the Davis Cup three-one when Jose Luis Clerc beat Chilean Jaime Fillol 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, Sunday (18 March). Top Argentine. Guillermo Vilas got his country off to a great start in the tie when he beat Fillol in Friday's (16 March) opening match.

SYNOPSIS: In the first set the players were evenly matched, and the dark-shirted Vilas played some long rallies with the top-ranked Chilean. Fillol eventually lost this point with a tamely-netted forehand.

With no tie-break in operation, the crowd got the chance to savour even more top class tennis as the Argentine moved into an eight-seven lead. Vilas serving at set point. His opponent had to pull out something special to save the set. When Fillol moved into the net, Vilas had the answer - a superb backhand pass.

In the second set, Vilas, winner of last year's Australian Open, surged to a five-two lead. When his opponent moved into the net at set point, Vilas passed him again with stunning back hand down the line, to take a two set lead.

Fillol had led the same Chilean team to the 1976 Davis Cup Final against Italy, but now he crumbled in the third set against Vilas. At match point, Fillol ballooned a forehand out of court to give Argentina the match nine-seven, six-two, six-two. Argentina have a tough tie in the next round -- against Davis Cup holders the United States.
