  • Description

The Yugoslavian tanker 'Peter Zoranic' - involved in a collision with two other vessels in the Bosphorus Dec 14 - was still in flames Dec 15 and causing great alarm as it drifted dangerously near the coast by Istanbul.

A second explosion had renewed the fire, and fire-fighting teams waited on shore in readiness as strong winds moved the tanker near fuel tanks and oil installations.

Fifty-one men and one woman were presumed to have died when the 16,300-ton 'Peter Zoranic' collided with the Greek tanker 'World Harmony' and the Turkish passenger vessel 'Tarsus'. The loss was estimated at between GBP6 million and GBP8 million.

All three ships were reported to be insured with Lloyds of London. A spokesman for Lloyds in Istanbul stated that it was the biggest fire loss he had experienced in the area for 20 years.
