    George Stephenson's Rocket?!

The locomotive at the end of the film is a replica of Leeds's very own early locomotive, which started work on the Middleton Colliery Railway 2 years before the appearance of Stephenson's first effort (which was a near but inferior copy of Leeds's!). The Leeds locomotive was called 'Salamanca' after the recent English victory there.

The original locomotive was the first of 4, largely designed and built at Holbeck, Leeds by Matthew Murray. It incorporated the rack and pinion motion invented by the Middleton Colliery manager, John Blenkinsop, to overcome the then current problem of hauling a heavy load on cast-iron rails which broke easily under impact.

The locomotive was the world's first commercially viable one, and attracted worldwide as well as UK visitors. Its rack and pinion motion was later reinvented for use on mountain railways.
