Record breaking Soviet airmen take off in a balloon to study the high atmosphere.
Full title reads: "Moscow. 12 miles high! Soviet pilots and scientists reach higher altitude than has ever before been attained in giant stratosphere balloon 'U.S.S.R.'."
Moscow, Russia, Soviet Union (USSR).
Pilots walk out across airfield. CUs of pilots and crew. Men of the Soviet Red Army attach scientific equipment to the balloon and help the crew into coats and cold weather gear.
The crew climb up into the round aluminium gondola - it has a big red Soviet star on the side.
Shots of the balloon starting to rise. Other balloons are nearby to watch the lift off.
Pan down balloon envelope and then back up as the gondola lifts off. Men on the ground look up and watch the ascent. Nice shot of a child looking through binoculars at the balloon.
N.B. The scientists are aiming not just to break altitude records but to study the upper atmosphere.
