William Gladstone, 1898
This image is taken from one of British Pathé's oldest films in the archive - it shows William Gladstone's coffin being transported through London. He was granted a full state funeral at Westminster Abbey and the Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII) and the Duke of York (the future George V) acted as pallbearers.
Gladstone's career lasted over 60 years. He served as Prime Minister on four separate occasions - more than any other person in history. When he resigned as Prime Minister for the last time, he was 84 and Britain's oldest Prime Minister to date.
