The 1924 Summit Attempts
The first attempt was scheduled for Mallory and Bruce, and if that failed Norton and Somervell would have a chance. On the third attempt, Mallory selected his new friend Irvine as his climbing partner. Irvine was not chosen for his climbing ability but more for his skill with the oxygen equipment. Mallory also referred to the 22 year old Irvine as "strong as an ox". Mallory and Irvine were last sighted on 8 June 1924, scaling Everest's north-east ridge, before vanishing.
