Tobacco Reels

This collection of archive footage related to cigarettes and the tobacco industry starts with a clip of Prince Philip visiting the Carreras Rothmans factory in 1960, not as an official visit but "because he wants to." The second clip 'Rolling Along' is a brilliant reel depicting a cigarette rolling championships in 1930. 'River of Gold' is from 1969 and offers the archive's best colour footage of cigarette production. 'Pot and How to Smoke it' is a discreet but controversial video demonstration of how to roll a spliff. Other videos in this historical collection include a newsreel about women smoking pipes.; cigarette testing; tobacco piles being burnt due to over-production and early 1960s promotional videos for companies like Broadleaf. One video of a Canadian tobacco plantation shows groups of shirtless men merrily harvesting the crops, whilst 'Coffin Nails' is the most hard-hitting clip, highlighting early fears of damage to health caused by cigarettes. British Pathes very own Bill Syman interviews Sir Alexander Maxwell on the subject who tries to throw-off growing concerns.
