Pathe News reels related to the 1950 Knockshinnock Colliery Pitt Disaster. 135 men were working underground at the time. 6 men near the bottom of the pitt escaped soon on into the diaster, 118 were later saved in a dramatic and victorious rescue mission. However, 13 men never returned and their bodies were not found until years later.
These newsreels really testify for and immortalise the brave efforts of a community that pulled itself together, working night and day, in an attempt to save the men of Knocksinnoch. There are fantastic close-up shots here of the families, friends, co-workers and rescue teams.
