    Tuesday, 18th Jan. 49. LS. Elevated view of dinner in Truman's honour, at the Truman-Barkley club. MS. Truman making speech at the dinner. 'I am in rather an embarrassing position. Both my bosses are sitting here at this table.(CU. Cut-in of Senator Alben Barkley pan to Mrs. Truman.) The only two people that I ever call boss. I still call Barkley boss as I always have. MS. Truman, Barkley and Mrs. Truman. Truman points to his wife as he mentions indistinguishable about calling her boss. CU. Truman speaking: 'Barkley and I have been going along with the Democratic party ever since we can remember, and he's somewhat younger than I am. (Pan to Barkley bowing) But I'll say this, as long as I was a member of the United States Senate, my leader started on a policy that the democrative party should pursue. I've followed that leader in pursuit of that policy, and I think that's a good plan. MS. Truman & Barkley. MS. Guests sitting at tables applauding. SCU. Truman continuing. Truman speaking: 'I had my sandwich and glass of buttermilk and went to bed at 6.30 and about 12 O'clock I happened to wake up for some reason and the radio was turned on the National Broadcasting Company and Mr. Kaltonborn was saying: 'the President is a million votes ahead, in the popular vote, we have yet to hear (prolonged cheering) and we are very sure that when the country vote comes in, Mr. Truman will be defeated by an overwhelming majority'(cheering). And I went back to bed and went to sleep.' LS. G.V. Dinner. MS. Truman continuing speech: 'About 4 o'clock in the morning, the chief of the secretariat came in and said, "Mr. President, I think you'd better get up and listen to the broadcast. We've been listening all night." I said 'alright' and I turned the darn thing on. There was Mr. Kaltonborn again, and then Mr. Hotchkiss came on and analysed the situation like all the secret service men and I said it looks as if I'm elected. Long past 10 o'clock I got a telegram, which said the election was over and I should be congratulated on the fact of the election. Apparently it was just too bad but it happened.' LMS.
