    GV Group of hot air balloons ready for the off at California's Catalina Island. MS Man adjusting gas burner which keeps the air in the balloon hot enough to rise. MS The two men who developed the hot air balloon, Ed Yost and Don Piccard who are also entered in the race. VS Only woman entrant Mrs Barbara Keith of Connecticut gets prepared and ties on her lucky doll mascot, she takes off easily but never to be seen alive again, she was found dead in the sea. LS Balloon heading skywards. VS Don Piccard, of the famous balloon family, takes off. LV Balloon sailing off. VS Don Piccard after his balloon had failed to leave the island - he is not injured. Air to airshot of balloon flown by Ed Yost skimming over the sea.
