Reel 1. Very nice animation at head of the film with Metropolis like landscape featuring an airship and aircraft passing modern architecture. Streamlined trains pass through tunnels pulling the words: "Pathe Pictures Presents." Production: F. Watts. Photography & Diagrams.... Joe Noble, George Noble & A. Farmer. Technical Consultant F.L.M. Harris. Car pulls in to a petrol station. Man runs beside the car then leans in to speak to the driver. C/U of hand pulling down petrol nozzle then C/U of nozzle being inserted into petrol tank of car. M/S of a shiny black car in a studio - rather like an advertising shot with a painted backdrop. Camera zooms in to the steering wheel - dissolve to another steering wheel then pull back to show the chassis of the car - stripped of its bodywork. C/U of rear number plate of car - reads MCI. Rear of the car tilts to show petrol tank. C/U of hand moving the "baffles" and "float" which have previously been described in an intertitle. Long pointed stick travels along the base of the car chassis to show the route of petrol from the tank to a pump above the engine. The pump is seen in C/U. Graphic drawing of the pump. A pointer indicates direction of the petrol travelling through the pump. A lighter in the shape of of a gun is lit to show how petrol burns with a yellow flame. In a laboratory a small amount of petrol is poured into a dish. C/U from above of hand moving the dish to spread the petrol. A long taper is used to light the petrol which produces a flame. Petrol is poured from a small bottle into a test tube. C/U of the petrol being moved around in the test tube. An instrument incorporating two metal prongs is put inside the test tube to make a spark. A current is passed through the prongs. Ignition takes place in the test tube and an explosion forces the tube out of the vice. Flames remain where the oil burns off. The function of the carburettor is explained. An animation shows how the carburettor works like a spray. The engine sucking in air is shown via an animation. The petrol float sinking and causing the needle valve to open is illustrated by an animation. Drawings of carburettors are interspersed with the intertitle: "Solex." More diagrams and animations are used to show the workings of an S.U. carburettor. A carburettor is shown on a real car. Pointed stick and graphic arrows are used to show various parts of the workings. Workings of the carburettor explained in detail using diagrams and models. Continued. Note: see record for neg - shots in different order.
