Holland. No title. Shot of waves crashing on a beach. L/S of man in the distance walking out into the waves - he seems to be beckoning to someone.

"This low-lying land is Zeeland's bulwark against the North Sea, and practically the entire village is occupied in the upkeep of the dyke defences - " Panning shot of the landscape showing several men walking into the wind, the sea, a windmill in the distance, houses placed lower than the land. Shot of wooden posts in a row with the sea beating against them. Sea defences presumably. Various shots of the tide coming in and men at work on the defences.

"Straw and stone (every stone imported) are the defending materials...and it would be a bad day for Holland if the dyke defence was ever breached." M/S of men digging and setting the straw and stone defences. Straw is forced into the ground with a stick. A woman in a shawl and clogs hands something to a man - probably a woman bringing food to her husband. She has a child with her. Various shots of men at work, forcing the straw into the ground and carrying large bundles of the straw to a big pile. L/S of the workers walking away from the camera at the end of the day.

"When a storm has occurred, they celebrate it with extra food - for a storm means damage to the dykes, and more money for the defenders to repair them!" C/U of two Dutch women in traditional dress (white bonnets and aprons) eat bowls of soup. High angle shot of the town showing the windmill in the distance. Night shot of a village street with a some kind of lighthouse at the end.
