The Cavalry Is Coming Soon - Troopers of the 3rd Cavalry Division Demonstration in Canterbury, Kent - 1916.

3rd Cavalry Division demonstration of horsemanship and other skills. Opens with shot of troopers all lying on ground with equipment while horses stand in a row. At a signal; men all jump up and start saddling horses. CU man saddling horse; pan to another doing same. Side shot troopers on horses.

Next; a game or exercise in which horse gallops by a scarecrow on a pole; as the rider stabs it with his sword. Another guy walks out to straighten the pole. Same thing repeated. Then another trooper comes galloping stabs dummy and then tries to stab a small white object on the ground; leaning down and poking with his sword. He fails; next guy succeeds. Another quick shot of the troopers bedding down near their horses.

Wacky looking contest in which troopers run with their horses to row of buckets; then drop to knees and bend over, drinking from bucket while still holding horse's reins. Cut to a few more tries at spearing the dummy. Next; riders manoeuvre horses in tight turns around a series of poles; with great skill; looks like horses are hopping and dancing; as in dressage! More dummy; more buckets. Jumping. White barred fence set up. Horse balks first time; then disappears (oops!) then clears the jump. Next horse knocks off the top bar twice.

Sports; games; contests; equestrian; World War One; animals.
