General view of films stars and other guests mingling at the British Film Academy Awards reception. M/S of film star Dawn Addams, unidentified man, film actor Hardy Kruger and his wife. Kruger winks at the camera. M/S of actor John Slater, bandleader Jack Hylton and comedian / comic actor Arthur Askey. Big-hearted Arthur dips his finger into John's drink, tastes it and mouths to the camera "it's good!".
Actress Yvonne Mitchell chats to a man with his back to us. Several shots of actor Trevor Howard, who won the award for best British actor in 'The Key'. Actor Curt Jurgens is seen with his glamorous and exotic wife.
At the awards ceremony we see guests seated at tables while Academy Chairman James H Lawrie speaks at a podium (not heard). M/S of guests sitting at Table A - Mr and Mrs Curt Jurgens and Michael Redgrave are seen. C/U of film actress Janette Scott at another table, chatting with a young man - Jackie Rae?
Film star Olivia de Havilland stands at the podium with Lawrie who makes a halting introduction about the award for best film (natural sound) so that Olivia doesn't know quite when to come in. She eventually gets to say 'Room At The Top' and the audience applauds. Producers John and James Wolfe come up to receive their awards (look like certificates). Olivia throws her arms around them, plants kisses on their cheeks and poses with them for a photographer.
Note: programme and extensive notes on file (Arthur Askey apparently accepted best foreign actress award on behalf of Simone Signoret!).
