Staged Bridge Assault - 1920.
Eire ( Southern Ireland, Republic of Ireland ).
British troops in action and ambush. All staged by British for benefit of cameramen. Some of this material may be genuine e.g. arrest of prisoners. (GEMMELL & STARMER ORIG. NEG.)
M/S of country house. Soldiers go inside and search grounds. They come back out and put out fire burning outside the door. Pub (?) front - 'JR O'Connor'. A few people walk along street past the doorway. Troops search an open car. Man stands in the back with his hands on his head. Another stands outside the car with a dog in his arms. The people get back into the car.
Soldiers come out of building and climb over sandbags to get into small, open trucks and drive off in clouds of dust. Soldiers march down muddy country lane, past old buildings. A few civilians follow and watch. The soldiers seem to be searching the buildings. They bring out an object that looks like a mallet; they attach it to a structure of spiralled tubing - some kind of weapon or transmitting device? A car has landed in a ditch. Soldiers seem to be taking the wheels off the deserted vehicle and searching inside it. They pull the car from the ditch using a rope attached to the back of their truck. Pan along the mud-spattered vehicle. Broken glass is removed from the windscreen.
Soldiers help a wounded man up the steps of a building. Line of suspects (? prisoners?) stand beside a wall. A soldier pulls one man out and shows him to us, then puts him back in line. Soldiers stand about. A girl gives food to some civilian men sitting on the back of an open lorry. Soldiers stand about watching and talking to a woman who stands near the truck. Several shots of a haystack on fire in a field. Lots of smoke - a stone building stands beside the haystack.
