President Eisenhower and Vice-President Nixon with wives leaving the White House. SCU. Four of them. SV. Mr and Mrs Eisenhower going down steps towards car. GV. Cars proceeding along road. GV. Cars proceeding along route. SV. Crowd. GV. Cars arriving. GV. Crowd. TV. Mr and Mrs Eisenhower get out from the car. GV. Zoom in, Capitol Plaza. SV. President and Vice-President come down the steps for the inaugural ceremony. LV. Crowds on stands. LV. Zoom in, Mr Nixon being sworn in by Senate minority leader William Nolan. SCU. Nixon speaking (natural sound): "And I will... faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter so help me God." SV. Crowd. LV. Zoom in, President Eisenhower being sworn in by Chief Justice Earl Warren of the Supreme Court. SCU. Eisenhower speaking (natural sound): "...preserve protect and defend the constitution of the United States so help me God." Zoom out to President who starts to make his speech. SCU. President speaking (natural sound): "We meet again as... four years ago and again... you have witnessed my solemn oath of service to you. I too am a witness today testifying in your name to the principles and purposes, to which we, as a people, are pledged. Before all else we seek upon our common labour as a nation, the blessing of Almighty God, and the hope in our heart... the deepest prayers for out whole people. The heart of Europe still stands tragically divided. So is the whole continent... and so is all the world... The decisive force of international communism and the power that it controls... international communism is shaken by a mighty force... Budapest is no longer the name of a city... Is is now a shinning symbol of man's yearning to be free.... The United States... until the darkness is no more. May the turbulence of our age... the brotherhood of all. Thank you very much." Speech is followed by some of the parade cars as they pass the dais. A shot of White house with Mr Eisenhower's face superimposed in a circle.
