General Eisenhower speaking (no sound, lip movement only): 'Now I realise' (and speaks to men sitting on either side of him) '...how long have I been talking' (answer 'ten minutes'). 'You know old soldiers are likely to be garrulous and you people have to watch me a bit. I believe that there is little use in my prolonging my part in this meeting. I shall have a few minutes to answer any general questions. You can understand that there are many questions in which I shall be perfectly helpless, but if there are any general questions I shall be glad to attempt to answer, as far as I can see. I want to say, before that period begins, just one thing,which I believe very, very earnestly. The success of which I speak, has as its foundation, the heart, the heart of free peoples. I realise that there is no criteria by which we can judge the proper contributions to this purpose if you're going to put it in material terms, man hours, money or anything else material. But in this great foundation, the heart, there is no country, however small, that needs to take a back seat to any other. In that each can aspire to be a leader and so far as I am concerned the only criteria that should be observed in measuring the contribution to any country should be expressed in this term, in these terms - we intend to put into this effort, one more man hour in proportion to our size than anybody else. If we can live by that simple little doctrine, we need have no fear. I repeat my very great pleasure in being back to this city, and if you people can, among you, think of any questions that I can attempt to answer, I shall be glad to try, and now I will wait for you.... Ladies and gentlemen, it has been a great pleasure to meet you, good morning.'
