Time lapse photography of roots growing underground. The root is marked with dots to show how most of the growth takes place in a very small section of the root. Microscope shot of the tip of a root. Jelly-like covering is made on the tip. We see this expanding under the microscope through time lapse. The covering protects the root tip as it moves through the earth. We see the root turn away from a bright light. The root turns down if it is placed in a horizontal position. If grows into the air it will turn back on itself. Roots glide over and around stones. Root is guided away from copper - if the "thinking tip" of the root is cut off, the root doesn't sense that the copper would be poison.
Seedlings grow straight downwards when crowded. When they put out side roots they try not to get in one another's way. Time lapse of side roots growing. C/U under microscope of two roots meeting and politely passing each other rather than crashing. Microscope shot of side roots growing. Root hairs develop. X-ray shot of activity within the root hairs. Graphic illustration of root hairs. Demonstration with a funnel filled with coloured water and sealed with an egg skin. Pure water is put into a glass and this is drawn upwards into the funnel. Animation of how the root hairs draw liquid in from soil. X-ray of liquid moving through the root. Starch grains. Top of a carrot growing - time lapse.
