A British Instructional Film.

Film about agricultural scientist and farmer working together to find scientifically balanced diet for the best yields. Feeding livestock - cows stand in fields outside a farm. Camera pans across chicken pens. Eggs are sent to a laboratory for analysis. Women weigh and analyse eggs. Man in white coats sucks liquid into a tube for analysis. Electric wire controls grazing of dairy cattle. Fodder crops - a field of Kale. C/U of the plant. Cows being herded to the milking shed. Inside the cowshed. Milking machines are attached to the cow. Churn is weighed and results are recorded on a sheet in pencil. Cows giving a greater yield of milk are fed more. Cows in pen are fed with concentrated food pellets. C/U of wheat. Field of barley. Maize being picked in "warmer lands". Minerals and vitamins are mixed with the crops. Two men pour small bags of minerals and vitamins into the main ingredients and mix by hand. Animation of a machine which mixes different ingredients into one feed. Barley is fed through the measuring gate. Wheat-feed is added, as is Maize and Linseed Cake.

01:31:41 The mix goes through cleaning filters, it is then cooked. Men check machine. Molasses is added. The mix is made into "cakelets" cubes or pellets. A sample is taken of the meal as it is being poured into a sack. Men in laboratory perform tests on the foods. Various methods of checking on productivity are described. A research farm is shown. Chicks are weighed in wire baskets on scales. Effect of experimental rations is recorded as the birds grow. Large battery house for hens is shown. Man puts pellets in the feeding troughs of the birds. C/U of some hens in the batteries. Number of eggs laid by each hen is written on the trough in chalk. This method of keeping hens is praised, as in the winter they are warmer and more comfortable in these conditions.

01:34:22 Movable poultry pens are shown. The pens are moved onto a new strip of grass each day. Turkey fattening house which is not cleaned out for over 3 months. Straw is added and raked over. Tiny piglets are fed with nourishing substitute for mothers' milk. Mixture of Soya flour and malted cereal is being tried out as a substitute for cow's milk. Several small calves in pens drink from buckets with their heads through bars.
