Cuts for newsreel story 47/36 - Royal Tour of South Africa.

C/U head shot of Queen Elizabeth (Queen Mother) saying goodbye to an army officer. M/S of King George VI saluting, Queen stands by his side with Princess Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth II) and Princess Margaret behind, before boarding the Vanguard liner ship. Natural sound of National Anthem being played. Men of the Duke of Edinburgh's Rifles are lined up on the quayside with Table Mountain in the background. The King inspects the troops. The Royals walk along a carpet.

Huge cheers are heard as the Royal Car stops at a spectator stand - truly enormous cheers as Princess Elizabeth emerges - quite unusual to hear natural sound like this. Children and spectators cheer, then sing 'Happy Birthday' to Princess Elizabeth (with noticeable South African accent). Natural sound accompanies L/Ss of the royals making their way onto dais.

M/S of Princess Elizabeth sitting on dais with prominent personalities watching a dancing display by children. Small schoolgirls dancing - seem to be Africans and whites together. The dance is a kind of prancing balletic thing performed to piano music. Teenage white boys and girls perform a sedate dance, rather like a slow progressive barn dance. They sing along as they dance - sounds like Afrikaan. M/S of Princess Elizabeth clapping, looking rather bored (what a way to spend your 21st birthday).

C/U of Mayor Abe Bloomberg wishing Princess Elizabeth many happy returns. M/S of Princess Elizabeth speaking (natural sound), saying she is very glad to see so many young people there, and thanks them for their birthday wishes. She urges them to continue to play their part in the development of their great country. She says she will always remember the tour and the welcome they have received and hopes it will not be too long before she can visit again. The Mayor leads the crowds in three cheers. Princess Elizabeth is driven around the stadium as the crowd cheer.

Several shots of Table Mountain with jagged outline, showing vegetation sprouting from the rock face and cable cars going up and down.
