VS of sports stars at the awards for the Sportsman of the Year. Stars include Sprinter E MacDonald Bailey, skaters John and Jennifer Nicks, cyclist Reg Harris, Fanny Blankers-Koen, Denis Compton, Aja Vrzanova, Mike Wardell (Editor of Sporting Record), Snooker and billiards stars Sydney Lee and Fred Davis, Script Writer Ted Kavanagh, Athlete Maureen Gardner. Minister of Health Aneurin (Nye) Bevan makes speech of presentation to Reg Harris. Good CUs of him through out. Bevan speaking. 'Ladies and gentlemen, as Mike Wardell has already told you, this is the fourth occasion upon which I've had the honour and privilege of performing this little ceremony. I ought perhaps to say that it is also an occasion upon which I have established a record, that no-one has taken the slightest notice of and I'm quite sure Reg. that it won't be accepted with the same universal acclamation as the one that you have achieved. I have just been told by my secretary that I have been Minister of Health longer than any other Minister of Health in the history of Britain. Now I know that there will be certain quarters in which that will be received with tepid enthusiasm. However, I thought perhaps I'd better mention it here today as I'm amongst sportsman, who will accept it with the credulity it deserves. Now this has always been a very happy gathering and the climate has always been cordial and that says a great deal for the spirit which is promoted by keen sportsmanship of a kind that we meet here to celebrate. I have very great honour and pleasure in meeting some most charming people in the sporting world, I wouldn't have met in any other way.... 'We hope that he has very many more records - I was going to say up his sleeve- but, in his legs rather, and that we shall see him here at our gatherings in other years, when perhaps I shall not have the good fortune of performing the ceremony. Verbal warfare at its best. Here are some of history's greatest retorts and snarling insults. These people certainly didn't mince their words!
