Description

Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII and then Duke of Windsor) on Royal Tour of South Africa.

Title reads: "New Era Films Ltd. Present ... Prince of Wales' Tour. Part 9. Produced by British Instructional Films Ltd. Surbiton, Surrey. Photographed by G. Barkas and S. Rodwell. Approved by the Admiralty".

Note: material is very poor quality in some places - neg. may have deteriorated.

Pretoria welcomes Prince - crowd in large stadium with domed rood structure in centre. Crowd stands - for national anthem? Prince enters and stands beneath dome. CU Prince in uniform and another man - looks like VIP, could be South African premier? CU conductor waving baton. Shots of orchestra. Shots of large choir singing. More shots conductor. Man presents Prince with casket. MS press photographers on roof of building. Mayor asks Prince to sign book. Crowd giving three cheers. Prince walking past cheering crowds. MS children in fezzes waving flags. MS Prince. MS lots of kids in big field waving. A man shouting from dais - he seems to be leading crowd in cheer, Prince standing behind him.

Vast crowds in Johannesburg. Prince's car, escorted by mounted guard, passing. Various shots crowds. More shots Royal motorcade. Shots crowd jostling. Students on carnival float decorated to look like Royal train. Prince is given gifts by small children. Carnival parade with floats and dancing tribesmen. MSs Prince and dignitaries watching. Floats include an old stagecoach, a working model of gold mine and a model of gold brick. VS tribesmen diving for pennies as that have been thrown by crowds.

Royal car passes through Seroweby, Bechuanaland. Black South African soldiers line the route. Various shots of the soldiers - they wear different old fashioned British uniforms mixed with traditional tribal wear, many wear kilts. VS cavalrymen, including one on a donkey. CU of Chief of the Bamangwatos who is in charge of army, he wears a busby and a kilt. CU of army officers talking. CU officer who turns and salutes. CU soldier pan down to show his feet, clad in rough sandals made from old shoes. Soldiers passing camera. LS of army gathered in crowd. Intertitles in this last sequence are very patronising to the Seroweby army and could be seen as racist.
