    Titles read: "PREMIER IN SCOTLAND".

    Edinburgh, Scotland.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill's motorcade moves through the Edinburgh crowd-lined streets (including Princes Street). M/S at ceremony in a hall which the William Darling, Lord Provost of Edinburgh bestowed Freedom of the City to Mr Churchill.

Churchill makes a speech (natural sound) to the assembled crowd. He tells them that he has come straight from a visit to the Fleet. He tells of the contrast between the Fleet in Scotland and a desert army he visited some seven weeks ago, but says that the spirit was the same. During this part of the speech we see footage of Churchill visiting the Fleet with Sir Stafford Cripps. He boards naval ships and meets the men, some not long back from action.

He talks of the recent speeches by German leaders displaying their states of mind, and how Hitler seems to be complaining that no one pays sufficient attention to his victories. He goes on to speak of the large-scale maltreatment of British prisoners of war by the Germans, which he says is to divert men's eyes from the evident failure so far of the campaign against Russia.

When he mentions "the heroic defence of Stalingrad" the audience bursts into applause and cheers. Talking of the Russian army he says we must see that we have reached a stern and sombre moment in the war which calls in high degree for firmness of spirit and constancy of soul. He quotes the words of the Minstrel, "keep right on to the end of the road, keep right on to the end".
