  • Description

M/S of Mr Shillitoe (on right) and unknown man sitting at a table with numerous pipes laid out on it at Mr Shillitoe's home in Hitchin, Hertfordshire; they are looking at an Indian Hookah. On the wall behind them are hanging many ornate and unusual pipes. High angle shot as they examine the Hookah; C/U of the Hookah as Mr S turns it over in his hands; high angle shot as he places it on the table.

C/Us of Mr S, then of a snake or coil pipe that the commentator tells us was "made in 1750 from 13 ft of glazed Staffordshire porcelain". C/U as Mr S points out the pipe's bowl; tilt down to show the mouth piece. C/U of the unknown man making notes. C/U of an ivory Japanese pipe and tobacco holder; Mr S removes the long, thin pipe piece from the holder and replaces it. Then he opens the tobacco holder to show tobacco inside; tilt up as he hold it to his nose to sniff it (no reaction!).

C/U of the Japanese pipe lying on the table as Mr S's hand picks up a Chinese Water Cooled pipe - a bizarre looking object like a brass perfume atomiser or watering can with an enamelled bowl and a gold and red tassel attached by a string to the pipe. He takes a brush with tweezers on the end from a funnel on the bowl and opens a latch there, puts the tweezers inside and shows how the user would pick some tobacco from the cooled bowl and drop it into the funnel (I think). He then puts the pipe to his mouth. C/Us as he replaces pipe and of Mr S talking.

C/U of an intricately carved Meerschaum Cavalry Charge pipe in his hands; M/S of the two men with unknown man making notes; C/U of a hand painted portrait pipe as it turns slowly on a wall; C/U of a pipe in Mr S's hands - the bowl is the head of a knight in armour's head, complete with moving helmet visor. C/Us of Mr S, then a Meerschaum 'Negro Head' pipe in his hands, unknown man looking and nodding, and the Seven Day pipe which has six small bowls attached along the length of it and a big one at the end "for Sunday" says the commentator.

Note: news cutting and cameraman's notes on file about Mr S.
