M/S of some black and white photographs of sculptor Sir Charles Wheeler, President of the Royal Academy since 1956, at work. The pictures are laid out on some red patterned fabric; zoom in to C/U of the centre photo showing Sir Charles with arms outstretched. More photos from the same session are placed on top.
M/Ss of Sir Charles in his studio, working on a large statue with his assistant on the day the pictures were taken. Two sculptures of female figures are seen either side of his work area. C/U of the base of a stepladder as we see a lady's feet and legs (in seamed stockings and black high heels - sexy!) start to climb the ladder; she kicks off her shoes and climbs up in her stockinged feet. M/S as Ida Kar appears at the top of the sculpture with her camera (and a great beehive hairdo); she looks down to take as shot, and Sir Charles carries on working while she directs him.
Commentator tells us Ida specialises in portraits of the famous and her previous subjects include Somerset Maugham, Bertrand Russell and Epstein (Jacob, presumably). High angle M/S as she climbs gingerly down the ladder backwards, as Sir Charles works.
M/S as Sir Charles and Ida walk into an area in the studio where several statues and paintings are displayed. Ida snaps Sir Charles as he polishes a marble (?) torso. M/S as Ida directs Sir Charles to sit on an empty plinth for a photograph; he obliges. Nice C/U of Ida's camera, a Rolleiflex, as she winds the film. C/U of Sir Charles, looking rather serious.
