Beautiful scenic view of a lake before a mountain as a man paddles past in a canoe; pan left to show a country house. M/S of a group of young men (aged between about 15 and 19) sitting outside with maps; an instructor is pointing to a gradient map of a mountain; commentator tells us they are at the Outward Bound school, where they will make a man and a mountaineer out of any young lad.
L/S of the country house as the boys come running out and across the field; they are all dressed only in shorts or trunks, and look quite a pale and pasty lot! Various shots of them on their cross-country run, past the lake and then along a stream where the instructor lets loose a shute of water onto their heads as they go by - very character building, I'm sure.
We then see some boys in canoes going down a river while the others watch; point of view shot from a canoe as we go over some minor rapids. A group of four boys walking through the hills with rucksacks stop to look at a map, then climb over a stone wall and cross a stream.
M/S of a young lad climbing up a rope attached to a high tree branch, then sliding down another rope to land on the branch of another tree. Boys are seen walking across a rope 'bridge' strung between two trees. The group of boys watch while one lad hurtles down a rope on a pulley device over a hill.
M/S of the exterior of a modern chapel with a glass front; the boys are seen going in as commentator tells us the school chapel was built by the boys and staff last year as a memorial to one of the instructors who was drowned on holiday. M/Ss inside the chapel as the boys file in and sit down; the glass front of the chapel looks out onto the lake and mountains; the curate starts the service.
Note: on file is a booklet about the Outward Bound Mountain School plus a leaflet detailing the areas covered on the courses.
