Star Item
  • Description

Cuts (rushes, out takes) for "Le Mans Special "- they may relate to Colour Pictorial item called "Twenty-Four Hours at Le Mans" or a documentary called "Twenty-Four Hours to History" - see other records. Pathe seem to have shot enough footage to make both the documentary and the Pictorial item.

    Filmed 15 and 16 June 1963.

Various shots of car crews checking car controls. C/Us of a driver and his wife (?). He chats to a man in a white hat. High angle shot of Ferraris (including Ferrari 250P) being worked on. C/Us of man with large quiff, Phil Hill chewing, and other men looking under the bonnet of a car. Various shots of men who are presumably car mechanics or something to do with the motor racing teams. Various shot of the cars and of the race. Group of young boys cluster around a driver seeking autographs. Shots of a man painting a number on the side of one of the cars. Shots of cars being worked on and drivers being interviewed. More shots of the race.

Some of the footage appears to be too fast - possibly filmed this way to give impression of high speed.

Seen in this clip: driver Bruce McLaren and his co-driver Innes Ireland in an Aston Martin DP214, a Ferrari 250P (car 21), Phil Hill and Lucien Bianchi in Number 18 Aston Martin DP215, Number 10 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM, Number 2 Maserati Tipo 151/3, Number 52 Rene Bonnet Aerodjet, Number 14 Jaguar E-Type Lightweight, Car 00 Rover-BRM co-driven by Graham Hill.

This clip contains footage of the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans. It took place over 15 and 16 June 1963. "High angle shot of cars being worked on (Ferraris?)" - yes, they're Ferraris. Number 23 seen at that point is a Ferrari 250P. "C/Us of man with large quiff and other men looking under the bonnet of a car" - of these men, the one on the left, chewing (at 01:06), is driver Phil Hill. He's then seen again at 01:29. At 01:31 we see driver Bruce McLaren. Then at 01:34 his co-driver Innes Ireland. At 01:44, car 21 is a Ferrari 250P. At 02:02, McLaren and Ireland's Number 8 car is an Aston Martin DP214. At 02:07, Number 18 is the Aston Martin DP215 of Phil Hill and Lucien Bianchi. Both men can be seen looking in to the engine at 02:15. At 02:19, Number 10 is a Ferrari 330 TRI/LM. At 03:04, Number 2 is a Maserati Tipo 151/3. At 03:22, Number 52 is a Rene Bonnet Aerodjet. At 03:42, Number 14 is a Jaguar E-Type Lightweight. At 06:27, Car 00 is a Rover-BRM co-driven by Graham Hill. At 06:34, No 50…
