James, ( Jim ), Carew was my great uncle. He was already a wealthy man, being a partner in Carew and Condron ship repairers and scalers. He not only won the Calcutta Sweep, but went on to buy the winning ticket in the Irish Sweepstake, the winnings of which he shared with the winning jockey, Steve Donohue. The lady in the fur coat was my great aunt Nell, ( Ellen ), Jim's wife, and the lady seen running down the stairs at the end of the clip is my mother, Alice Langan, who lived with Uncle Jim as his ward, until she married my father in 1939. Jim, Nell and my mother moved from " Ulverscroft " in Blundellsands Road East, to " Glengarriff " in Chestnut Avenue, Crosby, in the late 1920s. At that time , Jim had three Rolls Royces, and employed two chauffers, two or Three gardeners,and several household staff. He was known as a local philanthropist and endowed both St.Helens and St.Peter and St Pauls churches. His hospitality was legendary, particularly to the local clergy and various visiting…
