Graphic reading 'More Olympic ups and downs'. High shot of horse rider at Aldershot's Central Stadium as they start their ride during the men's three day equestrian event. Tight shot of male competitor getting on his horse. Close up of time keeper's stopwatch in his hand. Nice shot of two male riders waiting to start their rides, and then trotting off. Nice close up of Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands smiling as he watches the event. High shot, shot from a tree, of the course a rider rides past. Various shots of male riders taking jumps around the course. Brief of spectator watching on through binoculars. More shots of riders taking a difficult jump cleanly, and receiving light applause. France's Andre Jousseaume is thrown off his horse 'Gigolo' as he refuses to jump a fence, and takes a dramatic fall. Spectators watch on. France's number two rider Commandant Emanuelle's horse refuses to jump a fence on his first attempt, and unceremoniously throws his rider into a mud bank on his second as officials look on. Long shot of Swiss rider riding over the finish line, which we see a brief shot of before he finishes, then a tight close up of him riding without his helmet. Close up of France's captain Bernard Chevallier riding 'Aiglonne', who wins the gold, and rides through the crowd, taking the applause. Nice shot of unknown rider signing autographs, then a funny shot, shot from atop a horse, of the rear of a spectator walking with bow-legged gait, as 'befits a real horseman'.
Men's weightlifting next, with very clear audio effects of the weightlifters as they do their lifts. The USA men's weightlifting team stand watching the action. Great Britain light-heavyweight weightlifter Ernie Roe steps up first, but is unable to lift the weights above his head. USA's Harold Sakata is up next, and he produces a successful lift as the judges watch on. Korea's Lee is next, and he is unable to lift the weights, and bows to the judges as they look on. Stanley Stanczyk of the USA is next, and he successfully lifts an Olympic record of 286 lbs to win the gold medal. Pathe News 'The End' logo and music.

The equestrianism seen here is the Men's 3-day Event, Individual. It began on 10 August 1948, and ended on the 13th.

"Long shot of Swiss rider" - that's Alfred Blaser.

"Commandant Emanuelle" should read Rene Emanuelli.

The Men's Light-heavyweight Weightlifting seen here took place on 11 August 1948.

It's well worth noting that weightlifter Harold Sakata seen in this clip famously went on to portray "Oddjob" in the James Bond film, Goldfinger.

    "Korea's Lee" - that's Lee Yeong-Hwan.
