    Item title reads - Nottingham a port! Sir M. Barlow, Minister of Labour, opens new lock at Stoke, through navigation to Hull will soon be possible.

    A boat sails up through the lock with Sir M. Barlow and lots of other people onboard. He cuts the ribbon as they sail through, which declares it open. He takes his hat off to the crowds. C/U of him giving a speech afterwards.

    "Sir M Barlow" is Sir Montague Barlow.

    The title card identifies the location for this clip as being "Stoke". More correctly, the location is Stoke Bardolph, Nottinghamshire.

    The date of the opening of the lock was 9 October 1923.
