  • This magnitude 7 earthquake struck on 24 June 1942. Although some minor damage was reported in centres throughout the Wellington and Wairarapa regions, the worst hit towns seems to have been Masterton - eg see this newspaper report:

    Egineers reported at the time that the short duration of the quake is the main reason there was no loss of life or considerably more damage in Wellington city.
