  • Description

C/U of a man's hands cutting shapes from coloured paper with some scissors; M/S of Edgar Delia sitting at a table in his home in Caterham, Surrey, working at his hobby of making model paper soldiers as the commentator says "Edgar took up his fascinating hobby 35 years ago, because he just couldn't stand the wooden faces of lead toy soldiers". Behind him on a shelf and in a glass-fronted cabinet are hundreds of paper soldiers in full uniform.

C/Us of Edgar working on the tunic of a soldier; it looks like very intricate and painstaking work. C/U of a display case showing regimental badges. More C/Us of work on the paper tunic as Edgar sticks some tiny silver discs on the front as buttons, using a toothpick. Commentator talks of Edgar's attention to detail and patience in his work, often spending fifty hours on one figure, and how he gives to each soldier the likeness of some man he's met in the army at one time or another.

C/Us as we see Edgar pasting the drawn face of the soldier on to a piece of card or wood, and places the soldier, now with tunic on, to one side. From the mantelpiece he takes another, wearing a busby and full Grenadier Guards uniform. He takes off the hat and uniform (including a tiny golden bugle) and dresses the soldier in a khaki uniform.

C/U tilting down of a model of a Cameron Highlander, the 2nd Lieutenant Hamilton, in painstakingly constructed uniform, complete with tartan kilt and sporran (wonder what he's wearing underneath?). C/U of dozens of models lined up on a shelf; C/U of a section of Royal Marines who all have small drums and drumsticks. C/U of another section of Grenadier Guards in busbies, all holding trombones.

Note: print is in isolation/vinegar syndrome vault. On file is a small news article about Edgar Delia and his collection of over a thousand paper soldiers. Cuts exist - see separate record.

The great politician and orator Winston Churchill left behind a sea of humourous quips and discerning quotes. We remember some of his finest epigrams and witty ripostes.

British Pathe captured many extraordinary events on film over its 80 year history but sometimes the cameras were switched on when tragedy struck.

Verbal warfare at its best. Here are some of history's greatest retorts and snarling insults. These people certainly didn't mince their words!
