MASSED BANDS OF THE GUARDS LEAVE FOR ROME The film shows the bands of the five regiments of Foot Guards (Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards). The 'Description' assessment of 'Yeomen of the Guard' is incorrect. The men leading the bands are the Drum Majors of each regiment. They are clothed in 'State Dress' which dates back to the time of King Charles II. They only wear this order of dress when either before Royalty of the Lord Mayor of the City of London, so there must have been one or the other present on this particular outing. The bands left for Italy in February 1918 and visited Rome, Florence and Milan. The trip was an astounding success, with the bands playing to over 250,000 in front of Milan Cathedral alone. Of the two men shown at 0.24 to 0.26 in the film....the officer in the bearskin cap on the left is Major John Mackenzie-Rogan, Director of Music Coldstream Guards and Senior Director of Music to the Brigade of Guards.
