Amazing work British Pathé is doing by making available these historic films. I must say I was very surprised and deeply touched with this film about Madeira. I recognized my own mother, a 9 year old child back then, as being the little girl holding the kid goat on her lap (she is now 71 years old). Neither I or my mother knew any child pictures of her from those times. She still remembers those days when British tourists and travellers happily went to Camacha in order to see the traditional willow basket hand crafting. For many kids in Madeira, like my own mother, those were very difficult times, though - poverty, bad nutrition, child labour and famine were common. Obviously the movie doesn't depict the harsh living conditions these small kids were enduring back then, neither the child begging - in order to get some coins so they could have a decent meal - that always occurred when the British travellers arrived (her own words when I told her about this film).
