  • LONDON'S FAMOUS CLUBS AND CABARETS No.1 (1926). The alto saxophonist standing centre-stage is Al Starita, an American musician who fronted Jack Hylton's Kit-Kat Club Band. The remainder of the band were: Tom Smith, Edwin Knight (trumpets); Ted Heath (trombone); Jim Kelleher (alto sax, clarinet); George Smith (tenor sax); Hugo Rignold (violin); Sid Bright (piano); Len Fillis (banjo); Alfred Field (sousaphone) and Eric Little (drums). Opened in 1925, the Kit-Kat Club was located on the Haymarket in London's West End, and was regarded as one of the most famous nocturnal haunts in the metropolis. The first purpose built up-market nightclub, it occupied the basement of the Capitol Theatre, and played host to musical acts such as the Paul Whiteman Orchestra.
