Cuts from newsreel 47/82 - Leisure Shift Mill Workers.

Housewives at Wigan, Lancashire do an evening shift from 6pm to 10pm at the cotton mills.

Shots of Mrs Nellie Smith and another woman at work in the mill winding cotton onto reels (natural sound). Nellie says to the other woman "I think this leisure shift's alright" and they joke about having to get their husbands to put the kids to bed. Several takes of this sequence as we can barely hear them above the sound of the machinery on the first go.

General interior view of the cotton mill. C/U of thread winding onto spools on the huge machine. M/S of Mrs Smith deftly removing reels from the machine and depositing them in a box trolley. L/S of women of the leisure shift arriving at the mill.

M/S Mr Smith at home stirring an enormous mug of tea. Then we see him and two pals seated round table playing cards (natural sound).

Shots of Nellie setting the table for her children for tea before she leaves for her shift. Natural sound as she leaves them instructions. Nellie gives her husband his tea before she goes to work.

Several shots of Nellie going round the local shops. More factory shots showing C/Us of machinery. Women arriving at the factory for their shift. C/U of Mr Smith's playing cards in his hand. Men and women come running out of factory after their shift. Elevated view of factories. Mr Smith playing cards with friends.

    This is good stuff!
