One damaged car continues along the track while the other somersaults in the air and bursts into flames as it hits the ground. Concerned faces in the crowd as they see what has happened. Firemen run across track to attend to fire. Pierre Levegh Mercedes was the car that flew into the crowd. Cars pull in for fuel in the pits while smoke from the accident hangs across the track. Note: More than Eighty people died in this crash which happened on June 11th 1955. The footage in 55/48 shows the more graphic scenes of the aftermath of the crash which are left out of this documentary. The car which bursts into flames is the No 20 Mercedes driven by Levegh and Fitch.
