  • KING GEORGE REVIEWS AMERICAN TROOPS 1910 - 1919. The footage commences in Wellington Barracks, Birdcage Walk, with the parade then moving up the approach road and arriving in front of Buckingham Palace opposite the Queen Victoria Memorial. The band marching with the contingent is an American Forces band (a static British massed Guards' band can be seen across the road in front of the Q.V. Memorial playing the men past the King). The senior officer shaking hands with the King (may) possibly be Major-General John J. Pershing, the American Expeditionary Force Commanding Officer. The clip then moves on to Westminster Bridge, past the old St. Thomas' Hospital. I'm guessing that the American Army was marching to Waterloo Railway Station prior to their deployment to France in 1917.

  • My Great Grandfather, Colonel Walter Monteith Whitman of U.S. AEF is shaking hands with King George and reviewing the troops. AMAZING that I found this on video. Very touching moment for me.

Terrorism is nothing new. The Pathe archive has a vast collection of material related to terrorist attacks dating back to 1919 right through to the 2005 London bombings.

British Pathe captured many extraordinary events on film over its 80 year history but sometimes the cameras were switched on when tragedy struck.
