    Offenburg, Germany.

    French pop singer Johnny Halliday returns to army for national service after wedding to pop singer Sylvia Vartan. Panning shot French army camp at Offenburg, Germany. C/U camp sign, zoom back to L/S as Sergeant Smet (alias Johnny Halliday) walks into camp. C/U pan ditto as he salutes. Various shots mail being handed out to soldiers; while other soldiers only get one letter, Halliday gets whole sack of fan mail.

    Interior of barracks. C/U as the fan mail is poured out onto Halliday's bed. Zoom back to M/S Halliday laying on the bed and he throws the mail up in the air and looks bewildered. He then starts to sing (he mimes to soundtrack of one of his hits). C/U Halliday looking wistfully as photograph of Sylvie on wall, zoom into photo.

    Back in Germany ...

    M/S soldiers firing guns on range. Tank comes over hill and gets stuck in trench. Officer shouts men to retrieve equipment from sinking tank. Halliday's guitar is rescued from the tank and passed along the line to him. C/U Halliday as he sings French version of "Michael Row the Boat Ashore". The song ends, his fellow soldiers sitting round clap and cheer.
