    London.

M/S of 14-year-old teenage actress Janette Scott in school uniform, lolling in an armchair at her home and reading. Her father walks into the living room and hands Janette a box. She opens it to find he has bought her a 'grown-up' party dress and holds the dress up to see how it will look.

We then see Janette in her bedroom undoing her incredibly long plaits (almost thigh length!), brushing her hair and putting it up into a plaited bun - "the style she's chosen is simple yet gay" says commentator. She takes off her school blazer and starts to unbutton her school blouse.

We see her in the top half of the two-piece dress and a petticoat. She puts on the skirt. The dress is a little fussy, with flowers around the high neck, pert little sleeves and a flouncy skirt - quite typical of teenage dresses of the time. Janette then takes off her clumpy school shoes and striped socks, then puts on her first nylon stockings and some flat ballet slippers. She then goes to show her Dad the finished effect.

Note: small news cutting on file. Print used for telecine transfer is quite scratched.

  1. jamied says

Janette's father frequently referred to here is James Scott.

Not mentioned is the fact that Janette Scott was the daughter of famous British actress Thora Hird.

  2. jamied says

Janette Scott appears in many (over 30) British Pathe clips throughout the 1950s and early 1960s.
