The race is called the Elfstedentocht, (Eleven Cities Tour).

It took place on 18 January 1963. It became known as the "Hell of '63", for although 10,000 competitors took part, extremely low temperatures meant that only 69 finished!

The party-like night scenes at the start of the clip take place in Leeuwarden, and are called "Nacht van Leeuwarden" (Night of Leeuwarden), a traditional event that occurs the night before the race begins.
